Greece was out of the "game" early in this campaign to reach the World Cup Finals, but this did not they were going to Finland to lose the game, especially with such a heavy score. This was the first official game for the new manager of the Greece, Otto Rechangel. Nikos played the whole 90' and tried his best to stop the Finnish, but neither he nor the rest of the team succeeded in doing so.

"It was a painful afternoon for all of us and especially for Greek football" said Nikos after the game and he continued: "greek teams may get better and better each season, but the National team had and still has a lot of problems that we need to address and find solution as soon as possible".

Mikael Forssel scored twice in the first half with the first goal early in the game, 13th minute, and the second one-minute before half time. Aki Riihilati and Jonas Kolkka also scored for Finland in the first half with Georgios Karagounis scoring the only goal for the Greek side. Jari Litmannen scored the last goal of the game from the penalty spot.
