Nikos Dabizas admitted it was his team's consistency that was the key to Greece earning a place in football history, following their triumph over Portugal in the Euro 2004 final.
Angelos Charisteas' goal crushed the hosts' hopes of glory and crowned the Greeks surprise kings of Europe at the Estadio da Luz.
"We may not be the most spectacular team but we have certainly been the most effective side in this tournament," said Dabizas.
Greece had failed to win a game at a major tournament before their 2-1 win against Portugal in the opening match set them on an incredible journey that saw them oust defending champions France and title favourites the Czech Republic.
"Our hard work has paid off. We deserved this title because we have been the most consistent throughout this tournament," said the experienced Leicester City defender.
"We are now the European champions and no-one can take that away from us."
